ÖRBYHUS CASTLE
450 years ago, Erik XIV was held prisoner at Örbyhus. Gustav Vasa's eldest son, Erik, was imprisoned in the dungeon of Örbyhus Castle in 1574. Three years later, he died there, allegedly poisoned by his brother, Johan III.
The Örbyhus estate came into the possession of Gustav Vasa in the 16th century. The first proper garden at Örbyhus Castle was likely created around 1640 by the architect Simon de la Vallée, during Kerstin Sigrid Bielke's ownership. The redesign that characterizes the park today was completed in the early 20th century during Eugène von Rosen's renovation of the castle.
